Why Ghana?

While Ghana has experienced unprecedented growth and development over the past few years _{(IFAD report; African Development Bank),}the country still faces many challenges, especially when it comes to access to education.

In Ghana, 17% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school and of those who are in school, 28% will drop out before completing primary school _{(UNESCO, 2018)}. Additionally, over 14% of the Ghanaian population is illiterate _{(UNESCO, 2018)}.

PoP works with over 170 communities in Ghana to ensure that students overcome these and other barriers to accessing quality education. Currently, PoP is impacting over 42,000 students in Ghana through School Builds, Teacher Support and WASH programming.

With a population of around 2,300, this community is located within the Volta Region. Here, members of the community engage in farming. The English language is spoken here.

FLOKI Community's Impact in Dodo Dompa

The Dodo Dompa D.A Primary School currently has five classrooms, each of which are shared by multiple grades. The primary school is comprised of blocks provided by the government and tents provided by the community. These conditions hinder learning, posing a hazard to student safety and engagement.

In the coming months, PoP will be partnering with the Dodo Dompa community to build three new classrooms structure, six bathrooms and a new teacher office. The community is committed to providing higher-quality education to its students and will contribute 20% of the resources and labor required for construction. We expect to break ground in October 2021 and hope to complete construction in January 2022.

The new Dodo Dompa D.A Primary School will provide a high-quality learning environment where every child can reach their unique potential.
