Written by Kailee Scales, the CEO of Pencils of Promise (PoP), this story is based on real people and her experiences visiting children, families, and communities in far away places. My friend Marta lives in Guatemala. Her school was a long walk away, and sometimes she had to miss class to help her family.

And in Laos, my friend Bounmi had to study in a dark, cramped room, and he struggled to understand his teacher's language.

Life was not easy for us. There were no bathrooms at school. There was no clean water to drink or wash with, only water from the river, and we often got sick. It was during these times that we dreamed of a better life.
La vida no fue fácil para nosotros. No había baños en la escuela. No había agua limpia para beber o para lavarnos, solo agua del río,que regularmente nos enfermaba.

In Ghana, the chief of a village is sometimes called Togbe. They are leaders in the village and have responsibilities. They help make decisions for the village and are a part of ceremonies and celebrations.

responsabilidades. Ayudan a tomar decisiones para el pueblo y participan en

People in our village began to work together to make wonderful changes to our school and even helped build new classroom! Our old schools become happy place of learning.
La gente de nuestro pueblito empezó a trabajar en conjunto para hacer cambios maravillosos en nuestra escuela y ¡hasta ayudaron a construir nuevossalones de clases! Nuestras viejas escuelas se volvieron lugares felices para aprender.

Marta’s school has colorful walls, and Bounmi's school got big windows that let the sunlight in.
