Join Our Team: Vice President of External Affairs


Pencils of Promise seeks an experienced Vice President of External Affairs to lead revenue development activities that advance PoP’s mission and drive support of our growth plans.  The Vice President will report to the Chief Executive Officer, serve as a member of the leadership team, and contribute to the overall management of PoP. She/he will lead a team of marketing and development professionals, and will work closely with the PoP board, whose members are deeply invested and engaged in our fundraising efforts.

The position requires a high performing marketing and development professional comfortable managing concurrent priorities in a dynamic, high-growth, collaborative organization with onsite and remote team members both domestic and abroad. The Vice President, External Affairs must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and direct experience working effectively across organizational and functional roles within international NGOs.  

Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer


  Organizational and Team Leadership

  • Serve on PoP’s leadership team and contribute to the overall management and strategic vision of the organization, through the strategic planning process and the preparation of regular reports, analyses and counsel to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Lead, manage and inspire a team of staff members on the Advancement team charged with brand  strategy & stewardship, individual giving, institutional giving, brand partnerships and special events.
  • Provide leadership and direction for all revenue generating activities of Pencils of Promise including brand partnerships, website giving, individual giving, institutional giving and special events. 
  • Develop, oversee and manage the departmental budget
  • Work with the Finance and Impact teams to determine growth-expansion plans for programs including program business plans, optimization of expenses and funding availability/projections.

Marketing Expertise

  • Oversee our Marketing, Brand, PR, Creative and Digital efforts to grow PoP’s brand, drive awareness and generate revenue
  • Align marketing strategy with overall revenue generation strategy to ensure that top of the funnel activities fuel awareness, interest, and desire to invest in PoP
  • Identify and oversee the identification, analysis, development and implementation of strategic marketing programs
  • Design and implement marketing campaigns focused on awareness and conversion
  • Expand PoP’s brand story through creative collaborations and highly visible corporate partnership
  • Lead the strategic development and implementation of new digital communication solutions
  • Maintain brand standards across all channels by working with and offering guidance to the management and leadership teams.
  • Identify emerging business and consumer trends and technologies to keep PoP’s brand top of mind while enhancing the donor experience.
  • Oversee PR to drive awareness and engagement

Development Acumen

  • Collaborate with CEO and individual and institutional giving leads to establish the vision, goals, priorities and plans for PoP’s fundraising efforts, generating approximately $10million in annual revenue in year one
  • Develop ambitious yet feasible goals for revenue, donor quantity and donor retention
  • Develop PoP’s case for support and tailor to diverse donor audiences
  • Identify novel and creative strategies and revenue streams for PoP
  • Oversee the research and engagement of potential institutional, individual and corporate donors while supporting the team in building, expanding and cultivating existing relationships

Systems Development

  • Enhance PoP’s revenue generating capacity by codifying successful processes, tools and approaches
  • Work with the Finance and Impact teams to determine growth-expansion plans for programs including program business plans, optimization of expenses and funding availability/projections.


  • Bachelor’s degree is required, Master's preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in marketing leadership roles paired
  • Effective leadership and management plus mentoring skills and a collaborative administrative style based on authenticity and trust. This should be evidenced by prior development and management of high performance teams in the field.
  • A results-oriented nature and the ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, warmly developing relationships with diverse constituencies while simultaneously employing keen judgment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and best practices associated with marketing and fundraising in a dynamic non-profit or for-profit environment.
  • The highest degree of professionalism. Demonstrating leadership and gravitas to reflect PoP’s
  • Relationship building—persuasive written and verbal skills commensurate with the various internal and external audiences. Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience collaborating with board members in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts. This includes the ability to work one-on-one with board members to leverage the assets each brings to the development effort.
