Location of Impact
GHANA
Ghana was, until very recently, one of the poorest countries in the world. Over the past few years, the nation has experienced unprecedented growth and development (IFAD report; African Development Bank). Although the lives of Ghanaians have improved greatly, the country still faces many challenges, especially in the education sector.
In Ghana, 18% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school and of those who are in school, 28% will drop out before completing primary school (UNESCO 2012). Additionally, over 28% of the Ghanaian population is illiterate and out of all the current primary school classrooms, the government estimates almost a quarter need repairs (World Bank, 2014; USAID 2009).
PoP works with 112 communities in Ghana to ensure our students overcome these, and other, barriers to accessing a quality education. To date, PoP has impacted over 261,000 lives in Ghana.
VOLTA REGION
The Volta Region is located in southeast Ghana, to the west of the Republic of Togo and just east of Lake Volta. In many of our partner communities in the region, PoP couples school builds with in-classroom programming in order to create sustainable change.
To date, we’ve built 115 schools in the Volta Region and provided teacher training workshops and educational technologies across many PoP schools in the region.
Before a PoP School Build
Previously, primary school students of Afatsagbleve in the Volta Region of Ghana didn’t have access to formal classrooms. They were taught in a community chapel that’s poorly built of mud and wood, and has a metal roof. The building showed signs of deterioration evidenced by large cracks on walls, mold and water marks on wooden beams and rust on the corrugated roof. Inside, the students were crowded together, creating an overly loud and congested environment for education. The community realized that their children needed a space that would be more conducive to learning and therefore, started construction on a new school. However, due to limited resources, they had to suspend the project. With support from Stuart Weitzman, PoP was able to partner with the community to complete their project.
Your Impact with a New PoP School
Through your support, PoP was able to partner with the Afatsagbleve community to complete a new 3-classroom build for the students at Afatsagbleve D.A. Primary School. The Afatsagbleve build broke ground in August and was inaugurated in the beginning of March, thanks in large part to the involvement and dedication of the community. Your generosity has made possible a safe environment for primary students of Afatsagbleve to grown and learn. The community is enthusiastic knowing that their students will now have access to a higher quality learning environment.
