Meet Alexandra: she’s going above and beyond…and 26.2 miles for education for all

Alexandra Lock is an enthusiastic athlete on the move to support children’s education globally. No stranger to running marathons, Alexandra completed the Napa Valley Marathon just last month in support of helping students gain access to quality learning through Pencils of Promise. While this was the first marathon that Alexandra ran for PoP, it was one of many ways that she’s been engaging with our organization over the years.

Alexandra is an Admissions Counselor for 2U Inc, a partner company of Pencils of Promise that is equally committed to supporting to education and helping students reach their full potential. Recently, she had the opportunity to visit the PoP office in NY, meet with the entire staff and learn more about our current builds, the integration of e-readers in the classroom and the way PoP’s Monitoring & Evaluation teams are rigorously tracking student progress at school.

Through our partnership, 2U has impacted students by making the construction of several schools possible and supporting the integration of e-readers in PoP classrooms—but the employee excitement for education doesn’t stop there. Many 2U employees, like Alexandra, have started their own campaigns.

For her endurance fundraiser, Alexandra sent emails to friends and family, reached out via social media and planned multiple trivia nights at local breweries, even asking a brewery to donate some of the proceeds from one of her trivia nights to her campaign. She also sent personalized letters to her friends who aren’t hooked by social media to explain the story behind her campaign and why she was supporting this cause. As a result of her incredible dedication, Alexandra surpassed her fundraising goal! While we might not all be 26.2-mile runners like Alexandra, we’re inspired by her determination—both for running and for improving children’s access to education.
