WHY GHANA?
While Ghana has experienced unprecedented growth and development over the past few years(IFAD report; African Development Bank), the country still faces many challenges, especially when it comes to access to education.
In Ghana, 18% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school and of those who are in school, 28% will drop out before completing primary school (UNESCO, 2018). Additionally, over 14% of the Ghanaian population is illiterate (UNESCO, 2018).
PoP works with 150 communities in Ghana to ensure that students overcome these and other barriers to accessing a quality education. Currently, PoP is impacting over 42,000 students in Ghana.
VOLTA REGION
The Volta Region is located in southeastern Ghana, to the west of the Republic of Togo and just east of Lake Volta. In many of our partner communities in the region, PoP couples school builds with literacy programming in order to create sustainable change.
To date, we’ve built 130 schools in the Volta Region and have also provided our teacher training and educational programming to many PoP schools in the region.
Before a PoP School Build
Previously, many of the students of Tortibo attended class in unfinished classrooms. Due to overcrowding, a number of primary students were forced to learn outside in dilapidated mud structures that lack windows and doors. Additionally, a full class of preprimary students were learning outside under a tent, frequently interrupted by weather conditions. These conditions clearly posed a hazard to student safety and wellbeing, as well as to engagement and learning.
Your Impact with a New PoP School
Through your support, PoP has partnered with the Tortibo community to build a new five-classroom unit. The new Tortibo D.A Basic School school has provided the appropriate amount of space for all students to learn and thrive. Thanks in large part of the involvement and dedication of the community, this new school officially broke ground in November 2018. We have completed construction in July 2019 and celebrated with the community during an inauguration celebration shortly thereafter. The entire community is so enthusiastic that their students and children now have access to a high-quality learning environment!
