A Very Special Birthday!

Happy birthday to a huge PoP supporter, Sophia Bush! Today is a really special day for Sophia, not just because she’s turning 30, but also because for her birthday this year she decided to raise $30,000 for Pencils of Promise in order to build a school! Read more about her special day and special gift below! Sophia Bush is donating her 30th birthday to Pencils of Promise! After a recent visit with PoP to Guatemala, Sophia set a goal of raising $30,000 to build a school there. She asked all of her supporters, fans, family, and friends to donate whatever they have to help make her birthday wish come true, and it did! 5 days early, Sophia was able to raise $30,000 to make her birthday wish come true! Sophia is fund raising as an ambassador of our upcoming "Impossible Ones" campaign which officially launches on August 1st. Sophia was blown away that she was able to raise the $30,000 and decided that she didn't want to stop there. Her new goal? Build a second school! So, want to give Sophia a birthday gift? You can donate here and help her reach, and even surpass her second goal! Sophia is also offering fans the chance to win a trip to join her and visit the school they build in Guatemala!! You can enter to win by donating $30 to her #30for30 campaign and submitting a 250 word essay about overcoming your own "Impossible" challenge in your lives - a fear you have to overcome, a big milestone to reach, a challenge you've been putting off. Full details for the contest can be found here. A huge happy birthday to Sophia from all of the PoP team! We are so thankful for all of your support!

Xeabaj, Guatemala Gets a New Primary School With The Help of Some Special Friends!

On Monday, May 21st, the community of Xeabaj, Guatemala and Pencils of Promise inaugurated a primary school thanks to the generous support of Andrew Bachman and Robert E. Dickey. Prior to this build, Xeabaj had two deteriorating classrooms with dirt floors, which would turn to mud during the rainy season. Luckily, the school was completed just in time for the students to maintain attendance while learning in a safe environment! Below are some photos to recount this special day for PoP and Xeabaj!

The inauguration was a highly celebratory occasion with dancing, speeches, lunch, and also welcomed guests, including Founder of Pencils of Promise Adam Braun and adamant PoP supporter, actress Sophia Bush.  Once again, our warmest thanks to our friends Andrew Bachman and Robert E. Dickey for doing their part to bring education for all!

PoP Pic – December 13th, 2011

The beautiful Sophia Bush -- who also hosted our first Pencils of Promise Gala -- stopped by the PoP Office for a Lunch and Learn! Having returned from a recent trip to Laos with PoP founder Adam Braun, Sophia shared about her experience and how she got involved in social causes. Sophia Bush uses her fame for good; if you follow her on twitter or facebook, you'll see that she's a passionate advocate for many great causes -- one of them being access to education for all children! Thank you Sophia for your encouragement and supporting us in this movement!
