Why ghana?

While Ghana has experienced unprecedented growth and development over the past few years (IFAD report; African Development Bank), the country still faces many challenges, especially when it comes to access to education.

In Ghana, 17% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school and of those who are in school, 28% will drop out before completing primary school (UNESCO, 2018). Additionally, over 14% of the Ghanaian population is illiterate (UNESCO, 2018).

PoP works with over 170 communities in Ghana to ensure that students overcome these and other barriers to accessing quality education. Currently, PoP is impacting over 42,000 students in Ghana through School Builds, Teacher Support and WASH programming.

Adaklu amuzudeve

With a population of around 1,200, this farming community is located within the Adaklu District of the Volta Region. The Ewe language is spoken here.

Sunada's Impact in Adaklu Amuzudeve

The Amuzudeve D.A Basic School previously had six classrooms that were provided by the government, but two classes did not have their own rooms and were instead learning under trees outside the building. These conditions hindered education, making it impossible to learn when it was raining and posing a hazard to student safety and engagement.

In the past few months, PoP partnered with the Adaklu Amuzudeve community to build two new classrooms and a new teacher’s office. The community was committed to providing higher-quality education to its students and contributed 20% of the resources and labor required for construction. We broke ground in January 2022 and completed construction in December 2022.

The new Amuzudeve D.A Basic School will provide a high-quality learning environment where every student can reach their unique potential.
