Justin Blau’s Impact in Guatemala

Pencils of Promise Global Impact

PoP believes every child deserves access to quality education. We create schools, programs and global communities around the common goal of education for all. By partnering with local governments across Ghana, Guatemala and Laos, we support the construction of public schools and provide education programs including WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) and Teacher Support.

About WASH: 443 million school days are lost each year because of water-and sanitation-related diseases (UNDP). Through our WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) Program, we’re providing children with access to clean water, private bathrooms and good hygiene practices to foster the growth and development of students. With $10,000, PoP can bring WASH Infrastructure and programming to a rural community.

About Teacher Support:  To ensure that our students are receiving a high-quality education, we provide our teachers with training and innovative resources, enhancing the delivery of national curriculum and empowering them to lead dynamic and effective lessons.

JUSTIN’S IMPACT IN GUATEMALA

With the support of Justin Blau, PoP has built new schools and provided quality programming to thousands of students in Guatemala.

Updates from Justo Rufino Barrios community…

In the Justo Rufino Barrios community, students were learning in over crowded dilapidated classrooms. Students occupied rooms with leaking roofs and faulty paneling. The lack of formal classrooms and disruptive learning environment caused for a distraction for both students and teachers alike. Justin’s support has changed this — we’ve officially completed a new school here! The new structure provides a safe and secure environment for students to learn and thrive.

Updates from Caserīo Eca Bella Linda…

Students in the Caserío Eca Bella Linda community were learning in old coffee farm houses with rusting walls and deteriorating ceilings posing a hazard to student safety and well-being. In addition to hindered engagement and learning, five teachers were scarcely divided between all 147 students equalling to 37 students to a teacher. Thanks to Justin’s support, in October of 2014 the Caserío Eca Bella Linda community completed a new three-unit classroom block! The new structure provides students with safe and dignified learning spaces and clean water sources.

Updates from Sector Norte Aldea Concepción Ixtacapa…

Previously, students were learning in corrugated metal sheds built by the community and in private household rooms. With the support of Justin, PoP has been able to complete a three-unit classroom block. This structural update provides ample amount of room for each student to attend class in a safe learning environment.

MEET LESLIE

Leslie is a 5th grade student in Guatemala who enjoys math and reading. Leslie recalls a time in math class when the teacher asked a question and nobody knew the answer; “I gave it a try and it turned out I gave her the right answer!” Leslie says, “its important to learn as much as possible so that I can have a better future.”

Giving back to the community is very important to Leslie as she hopes to become a college professor in Cantón Xiquiná. She thanks PoP for improving her school and for teaching her the importance of health. Leslie always brings her classroom lessons back to her home to teach her family, and embodies the principles of PoP and our mission to provide access to quality education to not only students but to communities across the globe.
