When we first visited the community of Anyanui in the Volta Region of Ghana, we discovered students attending class in a dilapidated building. Classroom walls had cracks and holes, while wooden beams and poles showed signs of deterioration, evidenced by mold and water marks. As a result of high enrollment, classes were cramped and filled to capacity, causing poor ventilation. The congestion made it difficult for students to concentrate and limited their mobility. These conditions were not optimal for learning.
The U21 Foundation recognized and responded to the needs of the Anyanui community and their children. U21’s invaluable support and commitment helped us build a four-classroom school equipped with new ceiling fans, blackboards, benches, desks, doors, walls and windows. Anyanui community members supported the project from the very beginning and volunteered to work alongside the PoP team to construct the school. Our group efforts will provide hundreds of students with access to a strong school foundation and a higher quality learning environment that will continue to benefit them for years to come.
