Written by Kailee Scales, the CEO of Pencils of Promise (PoP), this story is based on real people and her experiences visiting children, families, and communities in far away places. My friend Marta lives in Guatemala. Her school was a long walk away, and sometimes she had to miss class to help her family.

Life was not easy for us. There were no bathrooms at school. There was no clean water to drink or wash with, only water from the river, and we often got sick. It was during these times that we dreamed of a better life.
La vida no fue fácil para nosotros. No había baños en la escuela. No había agua limpia para beber o para lavarnos, solo agua del río,que regularmente nos enfermaba.

In Ghana, the chief of a village is sometimes called Togbe. They are leaders in the village and have responsibilities. They help make decisions for the village and are a part of ceremonies and celebrations.

People in our village began to work together to make wonderful changes to our school and even helped build new classroom! Our old schools become happy place of learning.

Marta’s school has colorful walls, and Bounmi's school got big windows that let the sunlight in.

so now it is easier for Bounmi to understand all his lessons.

One day my whole village had a celebration of our new school. A woman named

Ghanaian Djembe Drums are a traditional African musical instrument. They are
handmade, the drum surface is goat skin. All Ghanaian
ceremonies are accompanied by the melody of drums!

The traditional cloth of the Ghanaian people is the bright and colorful kente cloth. It is worn for special occasions and ceremonies.

She told us that she believed in us, and that we could do anything. She came with a man named  Adam and she told us he had an idea after meeting other kids like us.

and family wanted to help make things better for kids at school.

They started Pencils of Promise and showed us that people can make a big change in the world. I also met a nice man, Mr. Freeman, and he became my friend. He had a big laugh and encouraged us to dream big.

But that's not all! We heard amazing stories about people from all around the world who helped Pencils of Promise. A kind family gave money to build new schools.

Life was not easy for us. There were no bathrooms at school. There was no clean water to drink or wash with, only water from the river, and we often got sick. It was during these times that we dreamed of a better life.

came to visit our village. They talked to our elders and neighbors.

In Ghana, the chief of a village is sometimes called Togbe. They are leaders in the village and have responsibilities. They help make decisions for the village and are a part of ceremonies and celebrations.

responsabilidades. Ayudan a tomar decisiones para el pueblo y participan en
ceremonias y celebraciones.

Marta’s school has colorful walls, and Bounmi's school got big windows that let the sunlight in.

The traditional cloth of the Ghanaian people is the bright and colorful kente cloth. It is worn for special occasions and ceremonies.

Adam and his friends
and family wanted to help make things better for kids at school.

They started Pencils of Promise and showed us that people can make a big change in the world. I also met a nice man, Mr. Freeman, and he became my friend. He had a big laugh and encouraged us to dream big.

Life was not easy for us. There were no bathrooms at school. There was no clean water to drink or wash with, only water from the river, and we often got sick. It was during these times that we dreamed of a better life.

In Ghana, the chief of a village is sometimes called Togbe. They are leaders in the village and have responsibilities. They help make decisions for the village and are a part of ceremonies and celebrations.

One day my whole village had a celebration of our new school. A woman named
Ms. Kailee came to visit us.

Ghanaian Djembe Drums are a traditional African musical instrument. They are
handmade, the drum surface is goat skin. All Ghanaian

The traditional cloth of the Ghanaian people is the bright and colorful kente cloth. It is worn for special occasions and ceremonies.

She told us that she believed in us, and that we could do anything. She came with a man named  Adam and she told us he had an idea after meeting other kids like us.

and family wanted to help make things better for kids at school.

They started Pencils of Promise and showed us that people can make a big change in the world. I also met a nice man, Mr. Freeman, and he became my friend. He had a big laugh and encouraged us to dream big.

Two friends rode bikes across many countries, raising money to build new schools.

Some famous people used their voices to
tell others how important good schools are
to kids like us.
