Why ghana?

Over the past few years, Ghana has experienced unprecedented growth and development (IFAD report; African Development Bank). Although the lives of Ghanaians have improved greatly, the country still faces many challenges, especially in the education sector. In spite of the progress Ghana has made in improving access to education for all, there are still challenges preventing thousands of children from going to school and learning. Classes are often overcrowded, water and sanitation facilities are inadequate, and trained teachers and school books are in short supply. The poor quality of education is reflected in students’ results (UNICEF).

In Ghana, 6.5% of primary school age children are not enrolled in school and of those who are in school, 35% of those in rural areas will drop out before completing primary school (UNESCO, 2018). Additionally, over 21% of the Ghanaian population is illiterate and out of all the current primary school classrooms, the government estimates that almost a quarter need repairs (World Bank, 2018; USAID, 2009).

PoP works with 209 communities in Ghana to ensure that students overcome these and other barriers to accessing a quality education. PoP has impacted over 100,000 students in Ghana.

eastern region

Located in southern Ghana, the Eastern Region covers over 8% of the country’s landmass and has the third-largest population of all regions in Ghana with more than 2.6 million residents. The Akan are the primary ethnic group, and the most commonly-spoken languages are Akan, Ewe, Krobo, Hausa, and English. It consists of 26 districts and its capital is Koforidua, a commercial center that was founded in 1875 by Ashanti migrants.

Sunada’s Impact in Kpeyiborkorpe

The Kpeyiborkorpe R.C. Primary School had previously outgrown the old school structure, with students learning in makeshift classrooms in the school library, as well as under a tree. These conditions hindered learning, posing a hazard to student safety and engagement.

PoP partnered with the Kpeyiborkorpe community to build a new two-classroom structure and a new teacher office. The community is committed to providing higher-quality education to its students and contributed 20% of the resources and labor required for construction of this new school. We officially broke ground on this school build project in November 2025 and celebrated the completed project in July 2026.

The new Kpeyiborkorpe R.C. Primary School now provides a high-quality learning environment where every child can reach their unique potential.
