A Pathway to Promise
Pencils of Promise (PoP) helps children everywhere fulfill their dreams. Through an ecosystem of holistic support, PoP creates safe, healthy and engaging learning environments that impact children, families and communities. Click on the dots below to learn more about our work.
In many areas of the world, children are taught outdoors, in unstable structures, or in crowded rooms with multiple-aged students. These conditions make attending school a difficult experience. PoP knows that all children deserve to learn in a safe environment. We partner with local governments and work with entire communities to build high quality classrooms and schools.
Not all children have what they need to access fundamental learning milestones, like reading and writing. Every component of our work is designed to help students achieve their academic goals and ultimate goals for their future. We provide students with high-quality pedagogy from PoP-trained teachers, and access to books and e-readers. We nurture students’ love of learning and cultivate a deep connection with themselves, their communities and the world.
Because resources are limited, teachers often enter the classroom without adequate training or support. Teachers who want the best outcomes for their students may feel unable to ensure children are successful in the classroom. We provide teachers with training, coaching, materials and ongoing support to increase their comfort and enhance their skills in the classroom.
Resources
Classrooms are the place where dreams are born. They need bright colors, books, and, yes, even pencils to curate imagination. PoP provides learning materials and resources to create vibrant classrooms where learning is engaging and fun.
In many areas PoP supports, communities must drink from the same river or water source where they bathe, clean dishes, and wash clothes. Without clean drinking water, children are often sick and don’t feel well enough to attend school. PoP provides water filters so while in school, students can drink fresh water from a safe source.
Girls can miss school when they start their period because they do not have the adequate resources or facilities they need. Families often believe that girls do not belong in school during their periods. We work to destigmatize menstruation through educational training for girls, boys, and members of the community as well as provide resources and lessons in creating reusable menstrual products for women and girls.
PoP is a truly global organization not because we work in multiple countries, but because we work with them. From the onset of any project or program, we partner with communities in our efforts from building new classrooms to determining how to best tailor support for teachers. We believe that this collaborative approach is key to the long-term success of our programs, and ultimately public school teachers and their students.
