For Javier Henriquez, the journey with Pencils of Promise (PoP) began with a simple yet life-changing gift: a copy of The Promise of a Pencil. “A family friend gave me the book,” Javier recalls, “and I was so inspired by the story that I sent a copy to a close college friend. That exchange ultimately led both of us to join the board of a Guatemala-based nonprofit.”
Years later, Javier’s path came full circle. His dedication to education and community led to a partnership with PoP to build a school in Nebaj, a remote town in Guatemala. The experience was deeply personal. Having lived in El Salvador, he understood firsthand how a modest investment in education could transform a life. “Adam’s story resonated deeply with me,” Javier says. “I was motivated to make a difference for fellow Central Americans less fortunate than myself.”
After nearly a decade of collaboration with PoP, Javier has seen the organization’s care, integrity and passion in action. “Jorge and his team advocated tirelessly for our project, despite multiple setbacks, and ultimately delivered a beautiful, first-of-its-kind special-education school in Nebaj,” he reflects.
Education, for Javier, is more than a gift—it’s a ripple that extends far beyond the classroom. “It not only transforms individual lives, but also strengthens families and communities,” he says. “Its impact is enduring.”
Engaging with PoP goes beyond financial support for Javier. “We continue to support PoP’s mission through ongoing donations, knowing that they build not just schools, but places of hope for communities around the world,” he shares. And while every memory is meaningful, one stands out: the celebration PoP hosted in Nebaj during his visit. “The warmth and gratitude we received from the students, their families, PoP staff and the broader community was unforgettable.”
Javier’s involvement has also shaped his own perspective. “I try not to take for granted the opportunities I’ve been given, and instead look for meaningful ways to pay them forward. Investing in childhood education delivers the highest return per donated dollar,” he says.
When asked what he would say to inspire others to support PoP, Javier is straightforward: “Even the smallest donation can genuinely change a life. The impact is real, immediate and profound.”
And while Javier’s dedication to education is clear, he also brings a touch of fun to his story. “I love karaoke. I don’t sing particularly well, but I make up for it with enthusiasm,” he laughs.
His motivation comes from deep roots. “I’m inspired by the story of my great-grandfather, an orphan who arrived in El Salvador with nothing but a dream of a better life. I want to help fuel those same dreams for others wherever I can.”
Javier’s journey reminds us that education is a promise—a promise that grows, spreads and changes lives one student at a time.
