Welcome to Luang Prabang Province, Laos!
With the support of Classroom Friendly Supplies, PoP partnered with a community in the Luang Prabang Province to construct a new two-classroom structure, with a teacher office to create a quality learning environment for hundreds of students and teachers.

Why Laos?
In Laos, a lack of educational infrastructure remains one of the greatest barriers to accessing quality education (BBC News Asia, accessed 2024). Recent estimates suggest that roughly 10–15% of adults lack basic literacy skills, with even higher rates among ethnic minority communities (World Bank, modeled data, 2020-2022).
Pencils of Promise works with over 190 communities in Laos to ensure that students overcome these, and other, barriers to accessing quality education. Currently, PoP is impacting over 23,000 students and teachers in Laos.
LUANG PRABANG province
Located in northern Laos, Luang Prabang province is currently home to more than 430,000 residents and sits at the intersection of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers. The capital city, also named Luang Prabang, has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1995 due to its architectural, cultural, and religious heritage, and it was in this province where the first Kingdom of Laos was established in the 14th century. The Khmu and Hmong are the largest ethnic groups in Luang Prabang province.
PoP has built over 190 schools in Luang Prabang Province and is currently working in collaboration with communities to support teachers and provide quality infrastructure to ensure that students have access to quality education.
Classroom Friendly Supplies Impact in Phon Savang
Before our intervention, Houay Khang Preschool and Primary School relied in part on an aging, community-built structure that was in very poor condition and at risk of collapse. This building housed two classrooms for Grades 1 and 2, creating an unsafe and unstable learning environment for students. While the school also had a second structure with four permanent classrooms, space constraints remained—particularly for preschool students, who learned in a narrow, overcrowded classroom that also doubled as the teachers’ office. Together, these conditions posed significant challenges to both student safety and effective learning.
PoP partnered with the Phon Savang community to build a new two-classroom structure and new teacher office. The community is committed to providing higher-quality education to its students and helped to contribute 20% of the resources and labor required for construction. We broke ground on the project in November 2021 and completed construction in February 2022.
The new Houay Khang Preschool and Primary School now provides a high-quality learning environment where every child can reach their unique potential.
