2023

Build Report

At PoP, we build school communities, including classrooms, bathrooms, and handwashing stations that provide things students need to thrive in school. We believe that all children deserve a quality physical space to foster learning. This is our progress toward that goal in 2023 alone.

A message from PoP CEO,
Kailee Scales

2023 School Builds

85% of the school communities PoP visits across the globe lack basic physical infrastructure. Inadequate infrastructure is a barrier to learning for students, and many do not complete their education. This limits their opportunities in life. PoP aims to work with these communities to ensure that students overcome these and other barriers to quality education. Together with our build partners and supporters, we transform the daily experience for a child, transform a community for generations, and with renewed access to learning and opportunity for children, we transform the world.

Cantón Cocales is a small town of about 500 families in the Suchitepéquez Department of Guatemala. PoP partnered with Canton Cocales to build a school for their students.

The old school structure was crumbling, and the paint on the walls couldn’t keep the classrooms from feeling dark and gloomy. It rains here almost every day, and the sound from the tin roof made it impossible for students to hear their teachers.

PoP supporters help build two classrooms for the students. Each of the bright and colorful classrooms received new furniture and learning resources and will impact the lives of nearly 1690 students each year.

2023 Bathroom & Hygiene Builds

Many communities PoP visits lack safe and hygienic infrastructure for students to go to the bathroom or wash their hands while at school. Often, children leave school in the middle of the day to use the communal bathroom at home, interrupting their day if they can’t make it back to school. PoP builds private bathrooms, handwashing stations, and provides water filters. We believe providing safe, clean infrastructure, and teaching students basic hygiene lessons is essential for keeping kids healthy, happy and in school.

Chom Nying is located by the side of the mountain along the main road north of Ngoi district. Almost everyone in this village is a farmer. They plant rice and have some livestock. Children often help with the daily workload.

Many of the students of Chom Nying were learning in an open-air half-finished wooden structure. Others learned in a run-down classroom too small to serve the number of children in class.

Together with our partners, PoP built new classrooms and provided desks, chairs, tables, and chalkboards. Chom Nying Preschool and Primary School now has three new bathrooms facilities. This build project will impact 462 students per year and improve their daily experience for years to come.

2023 Classroom Repairs

When a community builds with PoP, they have a partner for life. We regularly check in on our school build projects to ensure they are still structurally sound and the students continue to have what they need to continue learning in a safe and engaging environment. After several years, sometimes our older builds, and schools built by others, need repair. PoP responds with a sustainable and economical intervention to ensure students are safe and engaged for many years to come.

Welcome to Fodome Kordzeto, a town in the Volta region of Ghana just north of PoP headquarters in Ho. Just over 1,000 people live in Fodome Kordzeto, mostly farmers, thanks to the fertility of the land and its distance from major cities.

When PoP first scouted Fodome Kordzeto M. A. Basic School, we saw children learning in converted storage rooms, open-air pavilions and a formerly built classroom block in need of updating. Students were either at the mercy of the elements or learning in a dark, crowded room. Our team in Ghana knew the students of Fodome Kordzeto deserved better.

Since partnering with PoP, three newly built and three intensively repaired classrooms will serve the children of Fodome Kordzeto. Each of the bright and colorful classrooms received new furniture and learning resources. Fodome Kordzeto M.A. Basic School will also have three new bathrooms, so students no longer need to leave class and journey home to use the communal bathroom facilities. The new and improved Fodome Kordzeto M.A. Basic will impact the lives of nearly 248 students over the next 10 years, helping them achieve new milestones in literacy and educational outcomes.
