Since 2016, Air Plant Shop (APS) has partnered with Pencils of Promise (PoP) to help create more opportunities for students in Guatemala. What began with a simple idea “Let’s give back a little”, has grown into a longstanding partnership supporting four school projects and helping communities create better learning environments for their children.
For Christian and Anna, giving back has become an important part of their business and a way to connect their work with something bigger. Through their support, students have gained access to classrooms and school facilities that help them learn, grow and imagine new possibilities for their futures.
Education that Creates Possibility
For Christian and Anna, education is about more than what happens during a lesson. It is also about creating an environment where children feel safe, supported and encouraged to discover what they can achieve.
They believe that a classroom can become a “safe haven” for students. Having a welcoming place to learn, with the resources and support they need, can make all the difference for a child’s educational experience.
Across several communities in Guatemala, APS’s support has helped create safer, healthier and more supportive places for children to learn. These improvements respond to each community’s needs, giving students and teachers better conditions to learn, teach and grow together.
One particularly meaningful project was the classroom dedicated to Valerie Heinkel, at Santa Elena Chichop. The new space offers students a place to learn and build toward their futures. APS has also supported communities such as Chosavic and La Estancia Pachilllip, where school improvements are helping create more supportive learning environments.
Seeing the Impact Firsthand
Visiting the communities has given Christian and Anna the chance to connect with the people at the heart of this work. It’s often the small, meaningful moments that stay with them: seeing students settle into their desks, sharing a hug, reading alongside a child or listening to teachers talk about their students and their hopes for the future. These experiences put faces and stories to the impact, bringing the purpose behind their support to life.
Activities such as planting, school-building celebrations and adding handprints to a mural created opportunities for the team to connect with the community and leave behind a shared memory of the experience.
While a completed classroom or improved school facility is an important investment, meeting the children who will use those spaces makes the difference tangible. The conversations, laughter and handprints reflect what these improvements ultimately make possible: more opportunities for children to learn, grow and look toward the future with confidence.
Why They Keep Coming Back
Over the years, APS’s partnership with PoP has grown through a shared belief in the importance of education and the value of building lasting relationships with the communities involved. Their continued support reflects the personal connection they have developed with the students and the people working to create better opportunities for them.
That commitment has also become part of Air Plant Shop’s identity. By making giving back part of their business, Christian and Anna have a way for their team and customers to be part of something beyond the products they sell. It’s a reminder that a business can grow while helping others grow, too.
We are grateful to Christian, Anna and the entire APS community for helping make these opportunities possible and for bringing their customers along the journey.
